In her book Part and Apart: The Black Experience at Cornell, 1865-1946; author and historian Carol Kammen assesses the way in which African American students navigated campus life in the early twentieth century; the relationships they fostered among themselves and their white counterparts; the obstacles they faced and the resources they used to overcome these obstacles and the way in which they maintained their identity in a predominantly white commuinty.
