Riche Richardson: “Hattie McDaniel’s Legacy and the Rules and Mules of Marriage in Gone With the Wind,”

Professor Richardson of the Africana Studies and Research Center provides a talk on contemporary dating manuals like The Rules and Old South protocols of dating, Southern representations in Sex and the City and the fashioning of classic and contemporary Hollywood actresses as backdrops to discuss the legacy of the legendary Oscar-winning black actress Hattie McDaniel and the role she played as mammy in Gone with the Wind. The talk examines the marriage motif in the film, as well as it racial politics, and highlights the impact of this character on Scarlett. The full version of the paper is now published in Deborah Barker and Kathryn McKee’s anthology on film, American Cinema and the Southern Imaginary.
