Abstract:
This study is an attempt to challenge the notion of "polarities" of literature and politics where Black writing is concerned and to suggest that the basic ideas and concerns in Black life and culture have never completely superseded one another. In doing so, it further suggests that categories that we have heretofore prescribed are not so clear when one considers the difficulty in determining or deciding on the boundaries of "politics" and literature." For Black people in particular, the continuity of purpose despite changes in method has not only meant the deliberate merging of those concepts, but in a very specific kind of way.
